Traditional Italian Christmas Cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Sprinkles or decorative sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until combined.
  5. Roll the dough into small balls and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Press each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your hand.
  7. If desired, top with sprinkles or decorative sugar.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  9. Let cool, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Store cookies in an airtight container for up to a week or freeze for up to three months.
