Cheesy French Onion Meatballs

Juicy meatballs infused with the rich flavors of French onion soup and topped with melty cheese, perfect for cozy family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500 g ground beef (or a mix)
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup grated cheese (such as Gruyère or cheddar)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Herbes de Provence (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and garlic, cooking until golden and caramelized.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, and the cooked onions and garlic. Season with salt, pepper, and herbs de Provence if desired.
  4. Form meatballs the size of golf balls.
  5. Place the meatballs on a baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes, or until cooked through.
  6. Meanwhile, heat the beef broth in a large pot. Add the cooked meatballs into the broth for a few minutes to absorb the flavors.
  7. Serve the meatballs on plates and top with grated cheese. Melt the cheese under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until crispy.

Notes

Serve hot with crusty bread, pasta, or over rice. Feel free to add more cheese for extra flavor!
