Burnt Cream French Toast

A delightful twist on the classic breakfast favorite, featuring thick slices of French bread soaked in rich custard and topped with a crispy caramelized sugar crust.

  • 1 loaf of French bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Sugar for caramelizing

Instructions

  1. Slice the French bread into thick slices and place them in a greased baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
  3. Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they are well-coated.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Bake the French toast for 30-35 minutes until golden and set.
  7. Once baked, sprinkle sugar on top and use a kitchen torch to caramelize until golden and crisp.
  8. Serve warm, optionally with fresh berries or whipped cream.

Notes

For the best results, use day-old French bread for better absorption and soak the mixture overnight.
