Black Folks Sweet Potato Pie

A heartwarming and delicious sweet potato pie that’s a traditional staple at family gatherings and special occasions.

  • 2 large sweet potatoes (about 2 cups mashed)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and place the oven rack in the center.
  2. Mash the roasted sweet potatoes in a large bowl. Mix in the granulated sugar, brown sugar, melted butter, eggs, evaporated milk, vanilla extract, and spices. Stir until smooth.
  3. Roll out the pie crust and place it into a 9-inch pie dish. Crimp the edges.
  4. Pour the sweet potato filling into the crust and smooth the top with a spatula.
  5. Bake for about 55–60 minutes, or until set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Let the pie cool on a wire rack for 2 hours to firm up.
  7. Slice and serve warm, topped with whipped cream or ice cream.

Notes

Store leftovers in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
