Black Folks Sweet Potato Pie

A classic dessert loved especially in Black communities, this sweet potato pie is creamy, sweet, and bursting with flavor, perfect for family gatherings and holiday celebrations.

  • 2 large sweet potatoes (about 2 cups mashed)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and position the oven rack in the center.
  2. Mash the roasted sweet potatoes and mix them with the granulated sugar, brown sugar, melted butter, eggs, evaporated milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Roll out the pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish, crimping the edges for a nice finish.
  4. Pour the sweet potato filling into the pie crust and smooth the top.
  5. Bake in the oven for 55–60 minutes, or until the pie is set and a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool the pie on a wire rack for about 2 hours.
  7. Slice, serve, and enjoy with whipped cream or ice cream!

Notes

Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled, topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to a week.
